There’s often one error which people and personal trainers make when training their lower limb/legs

The switch which fundamentally triggers strength improvements from resistance training is mechanical tension

This scientific term essentially talks about the combination of force placed on a muscle (from a weight) and the stretch of the muscles (from range of motion on an exercise)

The blend of these activates cell signalling in your muscles which then starts the processes to develop the strength of your muscles

Often, people struggle to capitalise on this and make common error …

Looseness

By this I mean lack of tension and stability throughout the body, from head to toe

For example, on a lunge type exercise, stability is provided from your leg muscles, right through to those in your torso, and…

More tension = more stability, which allows more force and range of motion to be produced which then takes the effectiveness of your training up a gear

So how?

Lets take this lunge type exercise as an example

Coaching cues I’m constantly telling CP team members, to create this whole body tension is:

  • Taking a deep breath to fill your lunge with oxygen
  • Pulling your shoulders blades back and down
  • Planting your front heel firmly into the ground
  • Not relaxing at the bottom of the movement, let the back knee touch and drive upward

Just like a radio antenna needing guide wires to stabilise it, these cues trigger stability to then give you greater results over time from your exercise

Its so easy just to go in on an exercise with no focus, no real sense of purpose

But by focusing on key cues like this, really bracing your body, you get so much more

PLUS…

You’re not going to get yourself injured!

This just gives you an illustration of the value of high quality coaching, to not have to worry about GUESSING if you’re training correctly, and to yield maximal returns from your training efforts
