Most people give it a shot…

But most people do it really badly wrong

(including myself when I was 16)

Have you?

The deadlift and variations is one we use

In fact I love a trap bar deadlift

Done right it can be excellent at developing lower limb and whole body strength

(for health, fitness or physical performance)

Plus with the correct technique, improved posture

But this exercise is a prime candidate for a knackered back

And it doesn’t suit every body shape (long spines)

But to do it correctly there’s some basic principles to use:

  1. Squeeze your shoulder blades back and straighten your arms

This flattens your lower back and engages your glutes better

Don’t lose this position and let the shoulders roll forward

  1. Make sure your hips don’t rise

Commonly the first thing to happen on a deadlift is your arse comes upward

This now means your lower back will really kick in and exercises looses its focus

So really pay attention to pushing your buttocks DOWN and THROUGH

  1. Don’t rush the lower

This will cause you to round your lower back and put it at real risk

Equally you won’t make use of the period when you leg muscles lengthen

(which kick starts the pathways which lead to strength gains)

  1. Don’t lift your head

Many coaches suggest this, but it often causes you to focus not on point 1 (above)

And give the illusion your back is flat when often it’s not

Let the pulled back shoulder blades be your CUE for a solid back, not your eyesight

One of the many reasons why we highlight the importance of coaching

As you often don’t know if you doing it right and how to fix it

Happy and safe liftings!
