A surprising fact about me (maybe)
Im gonna surprise you
(or maybe not)
Despite being a Physical Fitness and Performance Coach
Talking with a brummie accent
And spending my day in a tshirt, shorts and trainers…
I’m actually a published scientist
(full on geek)
Oh yeah…
Yep, many years ago
When I did my Masters Degree
I did a research study
Which was then published in a Science Journal
‘The effects of combined sodium bicarbonate and carbohydrate ingestion on intermiittment exercise performance’
Yawn!
Now if I haven’t bored you off already…
There is method to madness!
The science like this is great…
It informs how to do the best training…
Nutrition, injury prevention etc.
That’s why I’ve spent years
Speaking with world leaders in this field
(and also traveled ‘down under’)
But the thing is…
This is black and white information
Do we live in a black and world?
Nah…
You train and perform in a grey world
And this means…
This great info, means nothing without context
TWO EXAMPLES….
So back to my published study
It concluded…
Sodium bicarbonate taken before exercise
Could reduce the physiology which causes fatigue
Here’s the thing though!
Its not practical…
Ever took this supplement?
It causes your stomach…
To feel the same as after laxatives
(and make you go to the toilet as much)
A good risk to take before your match?
Worthwhile gamble before your race?
Second example…
Plyometric training
This can improve performance
Lots of studies show it, BUT…
Unless your very well trained…
In the resistance training department
You will get more superior gains through…
Resistance training, getting stronger
And…
You won’t risk getting injured
So when you read about all these things
In your magazines
On the web
From other people
Just think about the context
That’s where i’m using my skills
Its great I’ve got the knowledge
(training, performance, nutrition, coaching)
From my geeky scientist mates world wide
BUT ALSO…
My years coaching in the field and understanding this
Getting to talk to experts about these things
Mean I also get the context
Knowledge can help you get faster, fitter, stronger…
But add in the experience in the context…
Its a whole new game!
Literally can’t wait to open up!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you’ve had a quality week
Dave
