So while treating myself to half a pint of Beck’s in Solihull

(how unprofessional!)

 

I wished to share a flaw we coaches/trainers at CP often observe in those we coach…

 

And one which is the real difference in:

 

  • maximising torso/core strength
  • removing low back pains
  • transferring strength into movements like running and sprinting

 

You see it on exercises from squats, press up’s, chin to lunges…

 

Consider a press up, and when you’re at the bottom of the movement about to push back up

 

To ensure you engage the muscles through your torso optimally, your spine shouldn’t move

 

But, often as soon as you press to go back up from the floor, your chin pop’s up and moves around

 

(just like one of those old fashioned puppets on strings)

 

On a lunge movement, the same happens…

You lunge down and just as you begin to push back up, your chin lifts up, yours eyes look up

 

In both situations, this instantly causes a shift in your spine position

And instead of CONTRACTING, it relaxes the key muscles in your abdominals and hips which you’re trying to train

 

Consequently, they reduce their activation and you limit the training effect placed on them

 

The beautiful thing is though, once you’ve overcome this flaw, you realise the exercise becomes EASIER this way

 

So avoid this keep your chin level and eye sight fixed on the same point throughout exercises

 

Your technical mastery will allow for greater results to improve your athleticism for running, cycling, rugby, everything AND…

 

Cure your glass back and train your torso/core more superiorly
