He almost killed himself doing it

The other week, I was at an event for CP

A chap came up to speak and turns out it was a big topic of interest for me

 

He had ran (or tried to – more on this shortly)

The Marathon des Sables

This is approx. 5 days, 5 marathons….in the Sahara Desert

 

Being the type of lucky bugger that could train and then blast out a marathon #genetics

Preparation was never his forte previous, but this was a big challenge

 

He followed a training plan

And rocked up in the sand to compete, but then…

 

After 2 days he passing out

His core body temperature hit over 43 degrees (that’s bad by the way!)

And he was air lifted out

 

Guess the chance of survival the Moroccan doctors gave him?

 

5%

 

But as you gathered, he defied the odds

How though?

 

Cardiovascular wise, he had a resting heart rate of approx. 25 beats per minute

So low in fact the nurse rechecked it 3 times

 

The lower your heart rate at any given intensity of work, the less strain on the body

A result of aerobic training, which causes improved endurance performance

 

This immense capacity of his cardiovasuclar system, was what Dr’s think gave him a chance

 

So next time your blasting out a fitness or conditioning session

Remember its not just going to make you superior in your sport/event

 

Its going to do a whole load more…

 

Its going to add years to your life

Increase your get up and go

Provide you with the physical tool box to do what you want

 

And…

If you choose to go across the Sahara, you’ll have better odds than most!
