In pre-season I put my balls on the line…

I jumped in on a conditioning session

With the lads I coach at Tigers

I was fine with this

(I’m big on practicing what you preach)

Plus I work like a mad man when I train

Here’s the thing though

Mentally, I wasn’t prepared

I’d conditioned plenty, but…

Not using this mode of exercise (bike)

And this specific intensity for a while

Through the thriving energy of 8 big blokes

(not including myself!)

Competing to cover the most distance

I was ruined

You know the mind games of fatigue?

When you just can’t see how your gonna make it?

Your lungs are breathing like an air compressor

Your quads have gone from feeling just tired….

To actually throbbing with pain?

How do you best get through that…

And how do you get better?

Because the more you can cope with that

The greater the training response

And the greater and faster the results

My philosophy on this…

Is built from the work of 2 genius’

Sam Marcora and Tim Noakes

(both geeky prof’s)

Who I’ve spoke with a couple of times

Their work shows your mind ‘paces’ your body

(Even when you’re not consciously aware)

Essentially to stop you killing yourself from fatigue

And that your mind stops you prematurely

So the old adage that you always have more in the tank…

Its true!

How d’ya limit this brake?

Because the more you can limit it, the greater the results

Well no one knows for sure, but…

My conversations with these lads and my own work…

Suggests some things…

  1. Train at the intensity you need to get used to as much as possible

  1. Train beyond this intensity

  1. Increase the amount of time you have to operate at this for at this intensity

In other words’ get comfortable being uncomfortable

Particularly at the work rate/intensity you need to operate at

The reward for all this?

Your training is FAR more effective…

Your FITNESS unreal

And your body LEAN like an athlete

This is why as a coach I’m big into a great training environment

A place full of energy, focus and determination to succeed

And why I place just as much importance on mental side of conditioning…

As the physiological
