Top 4 findings of 2015 which matter to your training and nutrition

2015 flew by, yet saw some cheeky developments in the world of fitness, training, nutrition and performance

Not only from my own experience, but from my colleagues all over the globe I have relationships with

So as I’m a lovely bloke, I’m going to share my top 4

 

  1. The benefits of strength training continue to explode….

More and more evidence is showing how professional programmed strength training improves so many physical qualities…

So much so its damning:

  • Endurance
  • Injury prevention
  • Power/speed
  • Body fat reduction without more muscle
  • Body fat reduction with more muscle
  • Bone health

See past the old clichés about lifting heavy stuff, EVERYONE can benefit (including my 60+ dad this week)

This latest evidence is most revealing in the wonderful benefits related to running and cycling endurance/fitness

And cutting down body fat so you don’t turn into a stick insect!

 

  1. Injuries happen, but you can control more than you think:

Evidence collecting over years in my former position, and from gurus worldwide, shows a clear trend

Injuries you sustain are more likely to be because of your (or your mad coach’s) inappropriate planning

Sudden, or sustained increases in training volume = the recipe for a gourmet injury

Plenty of injuries are uncontrollable, but many are

 

  1. Only a few supplements REALLY work:

Magic water, crystallised powder, goats testicles…

They’re all a big lie, they do nothing for you apart from lighten your bank balance

Carbohydrate, whey protein, creatine and caffeine are the only supplements you can bank to work on the whole

More expert nutritionists I know are reinforcing this heavily and moving away to more basic advice on this

 

  1. Classic thoracic

The mobility in the top half of your spine by your shoulder blades (thoracic spine) is showing more and more evidence of being critical…

In terms of stopping your lower back going into spasm and making you walk like a chimp, stopping shoulder niggles/impinging and maximising posture to improve movement and performance
