Training with mirror’s will only reflect poorer gains

Those shiny things which plaster the walls of the big box gyms

(and where ‘the egos’ hang out)

 

Why?

Just to be different? Nope

 

At the weekend a guy called Eric Cressey

(a world renowned strength and conditioning coach)

Was talking about how he had no mirrors at his facility in Boston

 

Me a Big E shared a bit of twitter love for this

We both believe that in general mirrors act as a friend but can be a foe for your progress in the gym…

 

  1. Your eyes are looking are the mirror, not necessarily where they should

 

Take a deadlift…

Based on where our platforms are, we coach our members to look at the line where the wall meets the floor

 

This sets their spine in optimal position to perform the exercise

Otherwise they’re likely to confuse lifting their head with extending the top half of their spine which often doesn’t happen

 

  1. If you rely on what you see in the mirror to monitor your technique, its too late…

 

In other words, the error has already happened, and your time to respond is too limited

 

This constant watching, rather than feeling, means you don’t develop the bodily awareness to react and to correct technique as effectively

 

To learn the technique of an exercise, sure a mirror can help initially, but I encourage you with all exercises over time to move away from this…

 

That’s unless you have an overwhelming need to check yourself out!
