Transferring Gym Strength into your Sport (Minions)

My son loves the film ‘Despicable Me’ where Minions rose to fame

 

I touch on this as there’s a villain character named Victor

Who to hide his geeky persona, renames himself ‘Vector’…

 

Because he creates crime with both MAGNITUDE and DIRECTION!

 

Now this ties in beautifully with a critical element in strength and power training

Especially if you’re worried you ‘gym strength’ won’t transfer to your sport

(e.g. sprinting, cycling, jogging)

 

A famous Aussie training researcher called Prof Rob Newton developed a concept many moons ago…

 

He stated that in order for strength gains to transfer to an activity, that trainers and coaches should relate training to the magnitude and direction which the sport activity requires force to be produced

 

Put more simply:

 

Running requires both vertical and horizontal forces, which are relatively quite high and rapid. each foot contact

 

Therefore, once you’ve develop sound levels of lower body strength, its key to include exercises which require these qualities

 

For example, in distance runners we use a lot of skipping drills to promote ‘stiffness’ which improves running economy and fitness

 

In rugby players we use sled accelerations, to tune initial acceleration and encourage both vertical and horizontal force production

 

In cyclists we use very short, explosive bouts of wattbike sprints

 

And with those who don’t have a sport we may use them because there excellent at triggering large amount of energy expenditure

 

So once you’ve laid down a sound strength base, you can begin to supplement this with such drills, which:

 

‘Commit optimal training devastation with both magnitude and direction!’
